The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
