Einstein's personal violin from 1894
The final amount will be over £1 million once commission are applied

An violin once owned by Albert Einstein has been sold nearly a million pounds at auction.

The 1894 model Zunterer is considered as being the scientist's initial violin and had been initially projected to sell for about £300,000 during its under the hammer at an auction house in Gloucestershire.

One philosophy book that Einstein gifted to a friend fetched for the amount of £2.2k.

All prices will be subject to a further commission of 26.4% added on top, meaning the total cost for the violin will exceed one million pounds.

Auctioneers believe that after the commission are included, the sale may become the highest ever for a string instrument not once played by a professional musician or created by the Stradivarius workshop – while the earlier record belonging to a violin reportedly possibly performed during the Titanic voyage.

The renowned physicist was an avid musician who began beginning his musical journey at six and persisted for his entire lifetime.

One cycling saddle also owned by the physicist remained unsold at the auction and could be offered once more.

All items presented in the sale were given to his good friend and academic the physicist Max von Laue during late 1932.

Not long after, he escaped to America to escape the increase of antisemitism and the Nazi regime in his homeland.

Max von Laue passed them on to a friend and follower of the scientist, Margarete Hommrich 20 years later, and the seller was her descendant who had decided to sell them.

Another violin once owned by the scientist, that he received to the scientist upon his arrival in the US in the year 1933, was sold at auction for $516,500 (£370k) in NYC in 2018.
