Rob Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the early names under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday after the squad's ten-game winless start to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the team - are among the options to be considered by the club ownership.
The manager is currently at another club, which would pose a possible obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town head coach - who made more than 100 of games for the club during his time as a player - is considered a leading contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the club board as they begin the search of appointing a fresh head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise candidate, although he would be a shock choice considering he was released by the club in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham United player is currently unemployed meaning the club would not be required to provide any compensation.
